The Sapphire Sparkle

She held onto his arm tightly. The young boy buldged his eyes in terror.

They were undoubtedly safe, but they were undoubtedly petrified.

Moon knew she needed to be the strongpoint for her and her brother. She needed to distract him in some way and she needed to emphasize the fact that they were safe.

“Chen, look at the flowers blooming,” Moon said pointing to the garden.

Her little brother did not even swivel his head or even blink. He stared straight into the distance.

Moon kissed the top of his forehead and slowly drifted over to the flowerbed. She plucked one of her personal favorites, the sapphire sparkle flower.

She walked back to her brother and gracefully handed him the flower.

“What flower is this?” Chen quietly asked while inspecting the petals.

Moon smiled. “The sapphire sparkle flower,” she explained.

Chen looked up at her. “That’s not a real flower,” he exclaimed with a scrunched nose.

“What is real?” Moon asked him.

He looked down upon the flower again and cracked the tiniest, little smile.

“I love you Moon. That’s real,” Chen murmured. He dropped the flower and looked up again with terror.

A tear rolled down Moon’s cheek and splashed onto Chen’s shoulder.

He saw that she was trying so hard, not to cry.

Chen grabbed her arm and put his other hand on the apple of Moon’s cheek, just as another tear was slowly rolling down.

“A sapphire sparkle,” Chen said and wiped away the teardrop.

He turned away again but clasped onto her wrist.

She stopped crying and smiled at her brother. “The sapphire sparkle,” she repeated.
