I am asked too often,
does poetry have to rhyme?
My answer is always no.
Poetry to me
is letting your heart sing
through unfiltered air.
Poetry is less about
how it sounds
and more about
how it feels.
However,
If I was a rhyming poet,
It would probably sound
a little like this :
Suicide rates rise
as mental health
declines
There's another demise
at the hands
of knife crime.
Tick tock a deadline
to make a headline
journalist pray
another innocent
dies
they pry on the lies
and the loss of lives...
I tend to tackle
the bigger issues
when my words rhyme
but see I'm not a rhyming poet
I just have a way with words
which is why you'll always find me
away with words,
awake early enough
to beat the birds,
Its a burden.
I lose sleep
because the words weep
and beg to bleed
onto a clean sheet,
now I'm playing hide and seek
with my sanity.
My humanity
tethers on the edge
of the balcony.
If normality
was a currency
then I'd claim
bankruptcy.
So if you're wondering why
I don't have
the capacity
to hold in
my poetic rhapsody
then realise this
is just one star
in the galaxy
of the solar
system of my mind.
See I'm not a rhyming poet
but still a poet
and somehow I still know it
I'm not saying I'm above
or below it, I'm just saying
I'm not a rhyming poet.
Because
When the words rhyme
I find it harder
to convey the message
and to be expressive
always second guessing
and paying less attention
to the direction
of my wordy intentions.
Trying to discuss
the worlds fetish
with hellish wreckage
whilst my mind races
100 miles a second.
See I'm not a rhyming poet
but if I was,
I'd probably end it like this:
I'd say farewell,
I'd drop a bombshell
but I don't have any of those to drop
so I guess not
I'll just put up my hand and wave,
say thank you,
you've all been great.
Peace.
