Masks

carved into my marrow

this facade I've created

a hawk disguised sparrow

when my old self migrated

hiding beneath the falseness

to preserve and protect me

a willing accomplice

limiting who you see

specifically chosen

to delay or disarm you

so you can't poke your nose in

I keep you disconnected, confused

I misstepped and fell

your grace, unforgiving

an angel in hell

the highest cost of living

so easily covered up

until you've forgotten

who you thought I was

you're one and only begotten

which accomplished the goal

but reopened the wound

placing salt in the hole

of one so perfectly groomed

peeling off the flesh

adhering a new mask into place

what you see is the mess

caused by a removable face

Peppy but dark. Nicely done, Kelli. 😊 Do these require a specific structure?

Don't we all wear a mask at times. Good job.
