Faded Fires Of The Past

It comes back hard, in flashes now

Those memories of who we were

Sparks and hints of when and how

That now, are just a blur

On gray days, when the ashes flit

Stirring across my mind

I catch my breath and my heart lifts

Caught in those ties that bind

Raging embers that suppled me

Have hardened in your wake

Extinguished by your passing

And the absence of your face

Remembering the me I was

Reflected in your eyes

Smoldering under graying skies

When death brought your goodbye

Outlines of our history rise

Like the flames of yesterday

I’m free to remove my disguise

Escaping from the fray

Those parts of me, replaceable

As I mask what I have lost

The pathway back, untraceable

As I prepare for the frost

Frozen here, by the lack of fire

That you kept ablaze and alive

That part of me has been retired

That day, a part of me (too) died
