Remembrance

A poem about loss, grief, and how the mind forgets details you want to remember over the years. For a friend who vanished when we were young.

If you were here beside me

I would sit in silence too

Just to hear the way you're breathing

I remember it; I do!

It was raspy and unsettling-

No, it whistled when you snored

It's not something I'm forgetting

I'll remember it; I'm sure.

If you were still here beside me

I would not fly through the time

I would spend it just looking at you

And your eyes would meet mine.

They were golden like a sunset

I mean, well, they were blue

No, as green as moss in twilight

I swear I remember you!

Your voice was sweet as honey

Or maybe as harsh as stone

You came across so funny

No, you made dignity your own

Who were you in my memories

From years and years ago

How can I still miss you

Someone I don't seem to know?
