Reignite

a poem

Embers slowly fade.

Energy steadily wanes.

Flickering lights all around,

Dancing shadows closing in.

Bitter, biting cold in the air,

Blankets of white cover the ground.

Stark branches reach up into gray skies,

Dripping icicles in vain efforts to survive.

In a frozen world,

All things hold their breath,

Waiting,

Pausing…

Flames sputter,

Sparks fly,

Cold wind floods around us,

Rush of darkness towards us.

Take this breath with me,

This next step,

To reignite the flames,

Drive back the shadows and the cold wind.

Stand together, hold strong,

Share what you have, and I’ll share mine, too.

Pass the hot cocoa and a blanket,

And read stories until the peace of a new night,

A new year, wraps around us,

Bringing hope and light

Back into our lives.
