Rainbows are a protest!

By Laike Twiss

Rainbows are a protest,

They show their colours clear,

To some a symbol of unity,

But in others they strike fear.

Fear is misunderstanding,

"What is it I can see?",

"Neither man, nor woman? "

"Red eyeliner on a... 'he'?"

The orange brick of stonewall!

Thrown to smash the glass!

Violent, vulgar, vandals

Creepy, living a farce!

It seems as though my biggest fears!

Have lead me to see sin,

All the queers and all their peers

This gay phase must be a fling?

Surrounded by my enemy?

Sunlight-yellow high-heeled men!,

The flags of colour engulf me,

And I'm hiding in a den!

A Den I call my mind,

My mind of hate and fear!

But maybe there's a green light,

To let me go on from here!

I have seen around me, laughter,

Love, Joy and adulation!

Blue faces turning happy!

For PRIDE appreciation.

Purple, Pink and rainbow hair!

How marvelous and free!

Is it true that all this, new,

Is awakening something in me?

Maybe life's too short,

To think the way I do!

The people here are happy,

And I guess I might be too.

This rainbow I once resented,

Has filled me with new glee!

These people are in love and happy!

And that's enough for me!

For once I was confused,

Scared and unaware,

But now I see how love has fused,

By just my being there!

The rainbow is a protest,

Acceptance never falls!

For there are colours all around us,

Sharing love and pride to all!
