"A child's rhyme, a child's dreams..."

By Sonya SchnarePublished 8 years ago 1 min read

A child's rhyme, a child's dreams

A child's eyes, a child's screams...

Have you ever seen a child so weak from pain?

So weak that minute movement is gain?

And realized that staying alive is her only goal?

These things I see, and try to bring smiles,

a small joke can run a few thousand miles.

Breaks my heart knowing how they feel,

not knowing what's true, what's real.

The one reprieve, escape from it, is sleep,

but in the dormant mind, nightmares creep.

My heart bleeds for I dream her dreams.

And I know how she wakes up to her own screams.

Alarms, buttons, IVs, lights and needles.

How do they expect her not to fear people?

Disguisted as nurses with fake friendly faces.

Someone as disturbing shouldn't be here of all places.

Her sweet dream becomes simply of home.

The one place she is safe and free to roam.

I'll tell you a story of a girl someday,

and of how she had to battle cancer,

just to run, jump, and play.
