Quicksand

A poem

Quicksand doesn’t pull you under

as quickly as you think.

The movies made us believe

it was like drowning.

It’s like sadness in that way,

never quick and easy.

Slowly sinking into sorrow,

if you struggle TOO much,

You start to sink faster.

You have to learn to float,

Water still mixed in that sand like

little bits of hope straining against ennui.

You float on those fragments,

the calm AFTER the storm.

You’re the only one who can truly free yourself.

Mere seconds feel like hours when you’re trying to find balance in chaos,

but that balance is all that will keep you from sinking.
