Dear Sir and Ma'am,
How does one write to ghosts?
Should I start with hi, how are you?
You probably don't know me
Then again, maybe you do
What's it like in the afterlife,
That vast world beyond the stars?
Is it as peaceful as the stories say?
Are you happy where you are?
If our paths crossed in the living world,
What would you think of me?
Am I just a worthless waste of space
Or would you see the good he sees?
Did you have a feeling all along
That your child would save my life?
Or are you watching as events unfold
Every bit as shocked as I?
Was this all part of some master plan,
The fickle design of fate
That you suffered so I don't have to?
Do you think that's a fair trade?
I don’t need to know your stories
To know you had a hand in mine
And I owe you a debt of gratitude
That cannot fade with time
Have I done my part to honor
The promises I made to your son?
Am I walking the right path?
Is there more I could’ve done?
Are you tired of all these questions
Which must go unanswered for now?
Until we meet in the next world
I give you that same vow
I’ll spend a lifetime fighting
Out of the abyss in which I fell
By proving your son’s faith not in vain,
I hope I honor you as well
Sincerely, a well-wisher
