Our marriage would last

There was only one thing I asked

That you knew nothing about,

I asked that the day we married

You’d marry me without a doubt.

***

For any of this to happen

A divorce you would need,

A piece of paper saying

Your wife has set you free.

***

But once again I was wrong

It seems you don’t care enough,

Your wife makes it a little hard for you

And you quit without a fuss.

***

All I really needed

Was for you to do it on your own,

I didn’t want pressure you

And I didn’t want to moan.

***

Now it seems you’ve left it

For your mother to do,

When all the proof I needed

Was a little effort from you.

***

Now there’ll never be a wedding day

Because of what I asked,

I didn’t think I asked too much

Just proof our marriage would last.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
