Prayer to the Waning Moon

A poem by Justin Black

Teach me to bow out slowly,

and with grace

Teach me to split myself in half,

so that I may remember

The darkness and the light are One

Teach me of the swiftness

of which all things are moving

Teach me to say thank you

In my tenderest times

May you always greet me,

Knees bent and kneeling, saying

Bless my bleeding body,

Its ache and its exhale

The gasp and the sigh

Illuminate the sounds

flowing from my mouth

Like water to my dusty feet

Until I am clean and new,

Red wings flying free in the river

And I am left open,

Empty and expectant

nature poetry
