Poetry Circle

the cycle continues

By Ellen StedfeldPublished 4 months ago 2 min read

So I walked right in!

But first I wandered the floor

After trying all the side doors

Only to discover the front was open!

Because even though there'd been

No reply to how I would gain entry

It was worth crossing the street to see

And when the first room off the lobby

(that could have been a reading of poetry)

was a sermon seemingly in Spanish

And the second a nail salon (as I knew

from many days of passing by)

And beyond the beautician,

the cartoon character sticker

heralding a hallway of art studios

with none quite clearly welcoming

and the stairwell stalwartly provided

No entryway to floors above

so I meandered my way back to the front

already glad that I had made my way further in

than ever before - tho being familiar

with this building's existence for so long

knowing if I had to walk right back out

my backup was to write anyway but first

knowing there might be a few more ways in to try

when lo and behold next to the signboards

carrying long lists of artists names

2 people were boarding the elevator

so I followed them to the 3rd floor

as good a guess to attempt as any

where the door they buzzed through

showed the sign I was looking for!

my sought-after POETRY CIRCLE!

in room #___ (blank-ety-blank)

well I forgot already, but it told me the way!

a few paces, and it was right there in front of me too!

So I walked right in!

And the door hit someone's chair

And I awkwardly rearranged my too many bags

And was chivalrously offered a seat

Only to drop my cane with a "thunk!"

But there we were, gathered together for poetry!

That being after I almost thought

that being so unprepared might be a hindrance

yet their words were a delight

mine were invited, appreciated even

so it set a precedent

charted a course

between knowing what could be better

in being better-ready

and enjoying being where I am

just as we are

today was a blessing

and the future is looking bright!

What more fitting way

to finish off the day

than with a few last lines of poetry?
