We Write How We Feel

By Andrew C McDonaldPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Poetry….The moods conveyed and reasons therefore

Are as numverous and varied as the stars above

We write poetry as the mood takes us:

🤗😢😂😉😊🥹😇🥲😆🥰😘🤪🥸🤓🤩🥳

When feeling down we write melancholy pieces

Poems that attempt to get to the bottom

To delve into our subconscious

Using a mental pickaxe to uncover the reasons

Unearthing nuggets of concern

To exchange for a hug from a friend

Why am I sad?

Why am I blue?

It may be a relationship or financial burden

It may be a basic hum drum day

Whatever the reason, melancholic we wax

In the hopes of rejuvenation

Or at least an understanding

Why? What happened? Is it my fault?

When we are feeling whimsical

We may pen a nature poem

Trees, flowers, sun, moon, stars ….

Places we’ve been

Places we’d like to go

A poem about our childhood

One about our favorite swimming spot

Our once and possibly still beloved hometown

A favorite teacher or icon

Flights of whimsy on which we soar

Soar into the stratosphere

Where we relax on clouds of cotton candy

As we watch the sun stroll on by

As eagles soar on wings of doves

We may visit fantasy lands of bold knights

Beauteous princesses finding a Prince Charming

Whimsy, Fantasy, Affection

These can make for lovely tales

Whe ANGER grabs us by the metaphorical throat

Pummeling us with frustration and rage

Burning a hole into our psyche

We may pen a tirade…

A poetic venting against … The Man…

Be it someone:

A lover, friend, coworker, supervisor, or even a stranger

Perhaps a political or religious happening

As humans we do get MAD sometime… PISSED OFF

So… we pen that rant

We let it out in a cathartic monologue

That assuages our frayed nerves

Allowing us to settle back to earth

To calm ourselves with a soothing release

Yes, poetry can indeed come from a place of anger

And hopefully smooth its ruffled feathers

Stroking the matted hair back

Erasing the wrinkles of fury from our countenance

Wjhen feeling HAPPY, joyous, exuberant…

Loved or In Love

We pen tales of triumph

Tales of new love aborning

New romance or old comfortable partners

Finding that special someone who completes us

A tale about winning a blue ribbon

At the fair

Eating cotton candy on the Ferris wheel

Taking an invigorating walk

In our favorite nature trail

Taking pics of waterfalls

Strolling hand in hand with … him… her

That overwhelming surge of protective instinct

That overtakes us when a child is born

Of a blessed union

A thousand other things, thoughts, experiences, people

That make us feel the joy

Feel like there is meaning to life

Even if we don’t understand what that meaning is

Every possible human

MOOD

FEELING

EXPERIENCE

EMOTION

Can inspire a poem…

A poem may be inspired by a picture

A movie that touched you

A gentle touch

A rough handling

A book that delved into your recesses

Making you contemplative

Teaching life lessons

……

Whatever the reason

Whatever the mood

You can set it down in poetry

Poetry is a multifaceted thing

Springing forth from the subconscious

Brought forth by a song, a wink, a dimple, a smile

The chorus of natures creatures

The angst of youth or

The reflective aspects of old age

Poetry, in all its myriad forms is meant

To help us BE IN THE NOW

And relax from the THEN

So write your poem

Pen your story

But do it…For You

THEN…

If it’s not too private

Share it

With someone…

Here or elsewhere

Let us, your fellow writers,

Shoulder part of your burden

Or… Don’t…

The choice is yours

Enjoy your cathartic release in your way

As I shall in mine
