Thunder and lightning roll overhead
Sheets of rain come down
Players hide in dugouts
As the crowd scrambles away
The tarp rolled out to protect the turf
Gleams under bright lights
The wind blows in pushing away the rain
Time to go – Play ball!
Water drips from the brim of a hat
Shake to get the water off
It’s rolling by your eyes - little drops
Distract you as the baseball flies by
The ball gets wet flying through the air
Dry it on your shirt
Fingers slip as you release the ball
It goes to where? You don’t know
The grass smells sweet as dirt clings to cleat
The ball slides from the pitcher’s grip
Bat dripping wet smacks the ball
It skims across wet grass picking up speed
The shortstop jumps as the ball speeds by
Dirt clings to his once white pants
The batter runs towards first base
As lightning lights the sky
Storm clouds leave and the crowd returns
Baseball still goes on
Players young and old are not turned off
From playing in the rain
