He bought me

A pill

To keep you

From existing

Unwanted daughter

A name I cannot

Let you adopt

I will not let you

Dance in your pink tutu

On stage

With an empty seat

In the audience

Play your first soccer game

With an empty spot

In stands

I will not let you

Get excited

When he decides

to try

And takes you to dinner

I will not watch

As you put on

Your best dress

But come home

With running mascara

As he did not

Hear a word you

Said

And disappears

The next day

I cannot let you see

Him hit the dog

Or hit your mom

Or throw us

Out on the street

A father who

Will forget your birthday

Vanish on Christmas

Who can try

But only when he wants

As much as

I can’t wait to meet you

To hold you

To bring the flowers to your show

To bring the Gatorade to your game

To eat take out on the couch

And watch the bachelor

A mother is not Father

And I will not have you

Crying in a couch

For years

With your daddy issues

Because mommy didn’t want to be alone one night

So Give me a bottle of water.

I will protect her

Above all.
