Piggybacks and No Takebacks!

Retrospective, nostalgia-drenched poem!

I never stopped

to think about it

until very recently

how sad it is

we can never enjoy

the simple pleasure

of a piggyback,

once we're fully grown.

Perhaps if Shaq

or someone tall enough

is a friend or relative

or you are short by comparison

you can still enjoy

the simple, giddy fun

of being carried around

on someone's shoulders,

legs hanging down and kicking.

Unless, of course

you win something,

then you can maybe

just maybe, enjoy

that pleasure again,

without it being weird.

Team mates grabbing you

and hoisting you up.

Legs hanging

down over shoulders,

all smiles, all cheers.

I miss piggybacks,

from uncles no longer here,

from a dad here, but not there.

To be hoisted up on high,

towering over everyone

in truly delirious joy.

Makes me wish for younger days! I seem to be doing that a lot these days. Thanks for the memories..

What a lovely contemplative piece, Paul!! You are a king of stream of consciousness! I’m going to have to make a study of you for this new challenge!

I feel the same way! Good old days...

This is fun, and now I want a piggy back too. Well done, buddy.

This is an absolute nostalgic delight, Paul! Really, really well crafted. I especially loved these lines - "you can still enjoy the simple, giddy fun of being carried around on someone's shoulders, legs hanging down and kicking" I felt again the joy of being carried and carrying as a boy, a father and a grandfather. Thanks for this, Paul. It feels like a gift!

This was fun and nostalgic, Paul!! You have no idea how many times I've thought "If you had to carry me, you'd be crying too." about the kids I work with... 😅

If you are petite you still can 😊This poem put a smile on my face because it brought back a lot of fun memories. Thank you, Paul

Yeah, me, too. My uncles never did that but dad did when he was home from work. Yes, great memories.

So simple a thing, reflected upon in such a way as to draw out beautiful, poetic nostalgia. Really beautiful work, Paul 💙 thank you for sharing!

Ahhhh - the joyful reminisces of simpler times! While piggyback rides (as the rider) are probably permanently in my past, I still find small joys in partaking in some childish antics, such as playing in the rain. Great thoughts, Paul!

Haha! I love this so much, Paul! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about stuff like this. The closest I've come to this as an adult is playing chicken in the pool, but still not as carefree and "deliriously joyous" as an out of water experience. *just scribbled onto my bucket list*

Aww, I loved this shot of nostalgia!! My dad used to put me up on his shoulders when I was little. What fun :)
