Perishable
What is Love’s Shelf Life?

Love is packaged
Impermissible is oxygen
Preserved
*
Until I was too eager
Ripping open my package of pure love
Placing pieces in waiting hands
Unworthy of holding
Hoarding portions of my completeness
*
The oxygen needed for my love to flourish came prematurely
By my hands
Exposed
Too early
The hands I chose treated my love as something to be punished
Not a parcel deserving protection
*
Initially inclined to believe my package’s fragile sticker had just fallen off
A bit too understanding of not being handled with care
Of any kind
Coming to believe the sticker didn’t just un-cling
Feeling like it got covered by one reading:
“Run Me Ragged”
*
Struggling to feel like something partial
Having spent so much time feeling like nothing worth being a part of
I was impartial in offering my love to the world around me
Impartiality
A desired trait in many things
But picking those who will carry around my pocket full of sunshine
Is not one of them
*
7-10 days after opening, give or take
Many don’t even get that
The pungency of toxins in the environment Corrupting love
Expediting the exercise of an expiration date on an attachment system originally intended to be timeless
*
Love transcends time by design, but we manage to make time void of love
*
Tell me,
What is love’s shelf life?
*
While you ponder
I’ll be restocking mine

Absolutely stunning and on point imagery! So many lessons shared too. Many mishandle and degrade something beyond precious... irreplaceable really. Congratulations on being featured as Vocal's "Creators We're Loving!"
Gosh that was so poignant and relatable. Loved your poem so much!
