You only saw the beauty in my sprouted seed
You never saw me grow
You didn’t watch as the rain fed my soul
Or how the sun shined on me when life was cold
You only saw me when I was at my best
When the harsh weather of life gave me rest
And I blossomed into something fresh
Beautiful and untouched by the pollution that weakens the flesh
Yet you were so intrigued
by the style of my petals and the shape of my stem
You never bothered to seek what was within
You fell for my allure, because it was something you could profess
Telling the world you found treasure in a place oppressed
Proud that you attained a gem
One that glamorized your own petals and stem
So when the cold winds started blowing
And my petals were no longer bright and glowing
You couldn’t see what was deeper
Only the fading of my glamour and the weakening of my eyes
And you threw me away so you wouldn’t have to watch me die
If only you had seen me deeper
Connected with my roots and known how to see me
Beyond what was visible above solid ground
But the depths of everything that I am
If only you realized that we constantly have to regrow
And each time we do we come back better than before
If you would have just seen the strength of my core
Connected the power of our roots and together torn away at life’s thorns
But I guess you weren’t meant to be a part of my reform
So now I know transformation is the test that always reveals
Those who recognize your beauty despite the shell that it’s in
