Waiting at the airport
Heart in throat
Anxiety tinged with regret
Washed over me
Small hand-drawn sign
Clutched in my son’s hand
Welcoming a new friend
To our cozy, messy world
A willowy girl
Walks hesitantly
Amongst her peers
Seeking out my eyes
Amidst foreign faces
Into my arms enfolded
Many questions cycle
Gathering speed and force
How to read new expressions
Attending ears
To soft tonal inflections
Made by gentle whispers
Of many thank you’s
Thoughtful gifts given
In late hours
Glowing light illuminates
Her beautiful face
My mind quieting
For I see
Kindness
Generosity
Reflected back to me
As we strolled through
A big mall
Bright eyes took in
Bells and whistles
Into an accessory store
For shiny things
Little trinkets, masquerading
As valuable treasure
A little “m” held by
Elegant hands
Lifting her curtain
Of shining, ebony locks
I clasp my gift
Around her neck
How blessed I am
To have a daughter
For an entire year

Aww so beautiful, hope it all going well. Love the warm embrace.
Oh this is the foreign exchange student you were telling me about! Hope she gets comfortable quickly. Loved your poem!
Och, this is beautiful, Marie. Truly. And enjoyed the story - which I am guessing is autobiographical? Great work, my friend!
Such an elegant poem and I love the narrative. Very personal and emotional.
This is so, so heartwarming dear!🥹 A poem full of love and soft beauty. Peach leaf vibes = fragile but strong.
