Paper Dragon

the origami I didn't know I needed

By Natasha CollazoPublished 9 months ago Updated 9 months ago 1 min read

Just a little passed the kettle popcorn, rainbow pasta and jars of pickled things I didn’t know you could pickle,

I was minutes away from meeting her.

I moved a little further just passed the pens and house decor that cursed me out.

I admired the gorgeous wine display that made me miss the elegance of drinking for just a second.

And there it was.

My excitement astounded me- how I was ever so smitten.

I want to dig into her.

Not the Merlot or salami

But that girl.

The girl that is smitten by origami.

It’s little and quaint.

Besides its enriched book-paper that’s it’s so delicately crafted out of,

What it reads I’ll never know.

A few words that peeked under its flaps spelled bacon and tomato.

Appeared to be a petite little recipe

molded carefully into a paper beast,

but I think that’s what took to me,

was its shape.

Would I have looked twice had

it been a duck? Or a plane ?

Its wings sharp, its tail long and a little flap on the back of its head.

Immediately I jolted.

Not a second did I question its silhouette.

But what clung to me was this,

the folk lore—what does the dragon really stand for?

A creature to be slayed.

Or a creature to be tamed.

A mystery of unknowns, a fire breathing friend or foe.

As I dig deep behind my blushing cheeks,

there it was, slid between my dreams.

The creature that fancied me.

Some kind of mutt-breed

between Sasquatch and Nessie.

Fierce and horrifying, resurrecting my inner Tolkien.

The recipe behind Frodo Baggins..

I got to meet her for just a second

Introduced by a tiny paper dragon.
