Over Dinner As We Ate

Serving hate

Over Dinner As We Ate

In the stillness of my mind

I see the child I left behind

chubby little fingers

catching fireflies in the dark

a fragile smile

a tender heart...

...but then it starts...

a new kind of game

a new way to play

we learned how to judge

we learned how to hate

we learned this and more

over dinner as we ate

as the food was passed around

we passed around our thoughts

who was worth our blessing

and who decidedly was not

Oh what a world this would be

if we still chased fireflies in the dark

learned love instead of hate

over dinner as we ate
