Our Tree

Our Love

By Colleen Millsteed Published 5 years ago Updated 5 years ago 1 min read

Survey the bush as you walk forward

Pick out the tree that looks the most stressed,

Notice the leaves that have fallen to the ground

In which this large tree was once dressed.

***

See how the branches are torn and wilted

The weight bearing down too heavy to hold,

The heart of this tree looks worn and jilted

Were once it grew young and bold.

***

The life this tree in the past supported

Has shrivelled and given up the ghost,

Life is suddenly not worth living

Without the will and energy of its host.

***

The birds have flown the coop

Aware that the tree is prematurely dying,

The lizards and insects have shifted house

They don't want to hear the tree groaning and sighing.

***

Now take your chainsaw in hand

And put this tree out of its misery

As it no longer has the will to strive,

Please ensure that the cut is quick and clean

It would be horrific for the tree to survive.

***

Now put your chainsaw down

And survey the scene,

Feel the air filled with sorrow and pain.

Notice our love in amongst the carnage

As this tree and our love are the same!!!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
