Let me start with our people are more

they were more than just slaves

they were more than just trapped people

They were humans with a purpose

Propelled to an enchanting culture

Filled with the rhythm of life

and beaming with pride not stripes

They were confident and strong

They were daring and work hard

With eyes of passion and determination

They were warriors and they knew their place

They would seek out the jungle that they knew

like the back of their hand

They would fight for their families and claim their land

Yes they were doctors knowing medicines we still

cannot understand today and healing their people

from ailments of their past

They were kings and queens

Princesses and princes filled with beauty

and knowledge and loved by their people

Having kingdoms that reign for hundreds

if not thousands of years ago before colonialism

So before someone tell you only slaves they were

think about this poem and the history it entails

My people were great, my people were strong

Even though they were black does not mean they

were nothing and slavery could not contain their nature

for it was natural for them to fight as they have fought it

and won in the past, present and future

we must live on against all forms of entanglement believing

knowing and respecting the work they've done.
