A day for valentines thus meet
and greet, with arms extended
with eyes glazed, softened
whilst hearts wide open
A burning ache, a longing great
of deep, desperate wanting
a day, mustering need
for a person, only yours
A Valentine, a love so dear
the only one seeing you clear

One Last Gaze
The mirror showed a reflection that wasn’t my own. It was another man’s face, sharp featured and gaunt. The absence of light in the living room cast the reflection amongst shadows, darkness filling each deep, concaved crevasse of the face. His sunken eyes swallowed by black waters, only the smallest of piercingly bright white dots peered out from his sockets. He stared back at me. His expression vacant, cold and unsettling. I swallowed when I saw this face; it was the first of many that began to appear in place of my own six months ago. It frightened me the first time I saw it, and it frightened me now.

Guess the whiskey was more important to you in the end, wasn’t it? It was more than the well-being of your friends; more vital than showing up to the places you promised you would and could come to; more critical of a matter than fulfilling your damn responsibilities and getting the press off your back.
