Only the Altar

All else was ash

By Thomas SpeerPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

I walk these halls now by myself

The smoke has settled with the sun

But a lantern flickers on the shelf

I cannot speak for my own health

I couldn’t see, I didn’t run

I walk these halls now by myself.

Brave men have come into my cell

But they couldn’t hear me come undone

And a lantern flickers on the shelf

I feel the house is cold, myself

Although the flames have overrun

I walk these halls now by myself

In the end none of my wealth

Could spare a thing once fate had spun

Though a lantern flickers on the shelf

Each day I grow more blind and deaf

My ashen body in the sun

I cannot stay here by myself

I miss the lantern on the shelf

About the Creator

Thomas Speer

I'm a God-fearing tumbleweed of a man, a gentle husband, loving foster parent, screwed up past and amazingly ordained future serving the Lord and expressing his revelation in my writing. Don't expect the dry and sanctimonious, though.

It's pretty cool that this is inspired by real events. God is in the details as well.
