On Dreams

A Poem

By Maithree WijesekaraPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

You come to me in the daylight,

and you follow me into my sleep.

You sail into the night, an explorer

tested against the might of the sea.

I keep you;

a treasured jewel of the crown.

I discard you;

a loveless marriage doomed to fail.

I build you in intricacy like

an automaton with a beating heart.

Unimaginable, but I have achieved it.

Unthinkable, but it arises before my eyes.

I build you in nothing more than hazy clouds and broken pencils;

An unclear plan with a middle, but no beginning

or an end.

You are the vision the great architects of old saw,

Before they built their cities.

The vision the queens and kings saw,

Before they raised their kingdom.

But,

you are the last glorious light every empire saw.

Before their walls fell,

Before their armies surrendered,

Before their power vanished.

You follow the Reaper, the Fates-

Wandering silently behind them, just as they wander behind

humanity.

You are my utmost salvation, and you are

my

ultimate ruination.
