On Dolls and Other Things

Dolls are more

Than decor

And models too.

Decor is enough

Beauty is generous

But purpose is my favorite excuse.

When you can find

Uses for things like

Brushing your teeth and holding your ensemble of fruits,

Cleaning grout from shower corners and hanging up your mothers picture,

Saving your spot in a book,

Squeezing the juice out,

That’s nice.

With a reason I could

Fill my soul and my cart...

Uses like excuses are born in my head

But my purpose is changing

To giving

Not taking

Generosity blooming

With every old jar every box every t-shirt every misfit I save from a dump yard

I lose when I don’t care for what has served me well

I win (and make new friends!)

When I can imagine new ways

Of being

Together.

Their beauty is shy now

Perhaps forgotten somehow

We all shed skins, one time or another

And it’s never pretty during “the thing”.

I can see they are enough

For something for someone

And I don’t give up so soon like I used to

On dolls and other things.
