Ode to Roddewig

(A sub-par celebration of a top-tier friend)

How do you rhyme Roddewig

and make it flow like a jig?

Why does a judge wear a wig?

Judges wear wigs primarily as a continuation of historical tradition,

symbolising authority, formality, and a sense of legal system tradition.

~

But let's not get side-tracked,

or ADHD brain distracted.

After all, it's a tribute to Roddewig—

this humble ode, so let's deep dig

into what makes the man, a legend,

a literary inspiration and friend.

~

It's hard to write without feeling

the man, the myth, might be reeling

at such half-assed, direct rhyming.

Has he got the red pen of doom out?

Will he feel elated by this shoutout?

Will he add it to his bio—extra clout—

that the one, the only, Paul Stewart

decided to create an ode with his art

-I think it's the height

of good old fashioned

camaraderie

that I credit myself,

when I credit himself

~

to the reprint mercenary, humourist,

(Horror Writers Association list!)

You get the gist—it's a flex of his wrist,

his creative, expert writer's wrist.

~

A friendship born from mutual roastation,

a friendship forged in mutual boastation.

~

Where does the Roddewig moniker come from?

Of Germanic origins? Suspicious diversions.

Wait—Stephen is the first of the martyrs,

since he went forth before us, publishing matters.

~

What can I say? The man gave me motivation.

For that, he deserves a sub-par celebration.

~

When I finally score a published reprint,

he'll have my thanks—for pushing, pressing.

~

So raise a mug, or pen, or tea

to Roddewigg (minus the extra g).

What's next for the king of creepy and funny?

Hopefully more books, more laughs—

and another Winchester story.

Thanks for reading!

Author's Notes: The third day and third poem of my new "Odes to" series, in which I write poetic odes to some of my fave writers and Vocal friends. This one is for the one and only Stephen A. Roddewig. I still need to remind myself that there is no double-g in his name. Despite the tone, I hope it goes without saying that Stephen is someone I hold in the highest of regards. You should check out his profile more and read some of his stuff. I have provided a link - he's won stuff and is a member of some cool Horror Writer Association.

“Judges wear wigs primarily as a continuation of historical tradition, symbolising authority, formality, and a sense of legal system tradition.” Lots of funny bits but this part above made me laugh! 😆 Well done!

  • Mutual roastation and mutual boastation, that was brilliant! 🍩🥐

  • Would you accept that I put off reading this so long because I was penning the final chapter of the final Dick Winchester book? And then used your Icarus ode to buy a slight bit more time because I would rather do anything than read personal praise? So special thanks to Matthew X. Fromm for throwing me to the wolves here by volunteering my name 😤 Setting that aside, you surely have paid attention over the years! The bit about the bio was especially prescient because I finally have a publish credit worthy of name dropping thanks to that NoSleep episode, after writing a piece way back in the day on here talking about how I decided to stop trying so damn hard to act like I have clout in my author bio. So maybe I have a bit of clout now. At least in the horror author community 😎 If nothing else, let this dedication forever cement my title as God of Reprints. And, hey it may be Germanic, but my family emigrated to the US in the 1850's and fought in the American Civil War for the *correct* side, so you can leave that speculation behind* *Except for the other half of the Roddewig family that remained in Germany up to today. As to what exactly they got up to during that unfortunate chapter and whether they were conscripted or volunteered... well I'm not trying to pry that book open.

Still like mine best! The others - they have merit but I am the G (which I think means the first but I'm not that down with the kids to be sure).
