Ode to a Radio

A poem about my antique radio

Before television, internet, video games, and Tik Tok

There was my best friend with mysteries to unlock

This dear old friend was my constant entertainer

Without need of a FaceBook moderator to rein her

Tommy from next door would come over to join

As we heard tales of derring-do and stuff to purloin

This best friend was there when I'd come home from school

He'd tell me stories of all types that were so truly cool

When I couldn't read the words in my comic book

I watched the tales in my minds eyes look

Superheroes, villains, comedy, mystery galore

All delivered right to my bedroom door

Amos, Andy, Laurel, Hardy, Abbot, Costello, Jack Benny and more

Would wisecrack their jokes with nobody getting sore

Comedians got laughs without filth, drugs, or racist pokes

They were just plain hilarious those old time blokes

Batman and Robin chased Penguins, Jokers, Riddlers

Through the dark streets of Gotham accompanied by fiddles

Each batarang thrown struck the walls of my brain

Bringing forth gasps, sighs, and heartfelt pain

I saw movies played wide on my eyelid's screen

As Superman soared over Metropolis in his Adventurous scene

I held my breath as Lois Lane would plummet from a building

And envision his grin as Superman saved her, always unyielding

Tarzan swung on vines through danger filled jungle

While Jane and Cheetah supported him without bungle

Tommy and I would listen, breath held taut

As Clark Kent headed to where villains fought

My imagination soared so high as my ears were filled

By Lamont Cranston's Shadowy knowledge, imparted as billed

Yes indeed the Shadow did know

The evil in men's hearts that they never let show

With Phillip Marlowe I followed many a clue

Leading to a Mystery Theater or a lady at the zoo

I miss this old friend, truly I do

But this old antique radio won't be replaced by new
