Ocarina of Time
one of the greatest games of all time

In a room
within a tree,
the boy without
a fairy dreams.
*
Nightmares disturb
him in his slumber;
a drawbridge,
a storm,
a woman on
horseback
with a child in
her arms,
and
an evil man.
*
He is awakened
by Navi,
the fairy that’ll
guide him on his
quest,
beginning with
the Deku Tree.
*
With sword and shield,
he enters the
great tree, defeating
the parasite within
and gaining the
emerald of
Kokiri Forest
but losing the wise
elderly tree
anyway.
*
Giant logs
serve as gateways
through the forest,
one leading to the
Lost Woods and the other
leading to Hyrule Field.
*
His friend, Saria,
stops him from going,
but only so she can
gift to him an ocarina.
*
He leaves, not knowing
if he’d ever return;
he does,
later.
*
He goes to Hyrule Castle,
awakens a sleeping man,
sneaks past the guards,
meets the princess:
Zelda.
*
The quest for the remaining
stones commences.
*
He equips a new shield
and enters a cavern,
defeating the dinosaur
and receiving Goron’s Ruby.
*
Then, he travels to
Zora’s domain, where
he’s eaten by their deity,
rescues their princess,
kills another parasite,
and gets engaged.
He doesn’t know what
that means exactly, but he
got the Zora’s Sapphire, so
he doesn’t worry about it.
*
He tries to return to
Hyrule Castle
but his nightmare
comes true.
All that remains
is the ocarina of time.
*
In the temple of time,
he gives up the stones
and plays a song.
The doors open to
reveal the Master Sword.
He grabs it.
The evil man appears.
*
Seven years pass.
*
He is older.
Taller.
And the world
is in ruin.
Redeads run
the market place that
once flourished.
Ganondorf, the evil man,
has taken over.
*
A new quest begins.
A quest for the sages.
A quest for medallions.
A quest to defeat
Ganondorf.
*
He receives the Light Medallion
immediately upon awakening
but the others don’t come
so easily.
*
One by one,
he collects them all.
*
The Forest Medallion
from his friend, Saria.
The Fire Medallion
from his goron friend, Darunia.
The Water Medallion
from his Zora fiancee, Ruto.
The Shadow Medallion
from Zelda’s keeper, Impa.
The Spirit Medallion
from the Gerudo thief, Nabooru.
*
With the sages found
and the medallions collected,
he reunites with Zelda
before she’s captured by
Ganondorf.
*
He climbs Ganon Castle
to rescue her and he succeeds.
The tower collapses, but
they make it out just in time.
*
Yet,
another battle
Commences,
as Ganondorf refuses
to be defeated.
He becomes a beast,
Ganon.
Weakened by Link,
our fierce hero,
the sages lock Ganon
away, who curses that
he’ll keep returning.
*
He returns to his
own time, back to when
he was a child.
Only,
he’s not really a child
anymore, after everything.
Because he remembers.
*
Navi leaves.
Everyone celebrates.
Link looks forward
to a bigger adventure.
Because the ending of one
story is just the beginning of
another.
