A Fractured Nursery Rhyme

Hey diddle Diddler-

That cat’s a fiddler.

The cows have jumped over the wall?

The red hats just laughed

To see cruelty made sport

While the rich ran away with it all!

Author’s note:

This is my first such Rhyme, but it is just the latest one in the tradition of what we now call Nursery Rhymes.

Those ‘Mother Goose’ rhymes were written as commentary on the social and political situations of their times.

Famines, plagues, noblemen/peeping Toms roaming at night, wars… all were fair game.

Will I write more? Maybe. There are enough topics swirling about, so perhaps I will.

If you write one please add a link below in the comments.

Great approach to take. I sometimes wonder who the dish and the spoon were before being thus immortalised. Presumably some courtiers. Congrats on the TS

  • What fun, thankyou for sharing and congratulations on Top Story xx

Wicked!!! Great concept Judey and a great way of highlighting global sociopolitical and economic issues. Should I feel so inclined, I will definitely link you. Congratulations on being featured!

This fractured rhyme feels like it’s speaking directly to our times. I’m curious, do you plan to explore other nursery rhymes with similar twists Would love to read more.

I liked this one, and you are right, Judey, there’s no shortage of material for social commentary these days.

Kind of reminds of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. There was a segment on that cartoon show known as Fractured Fairy Tales. Good job and I hope you do write more of these.

  • Great poetic analogy for the current situation
