Merry Christmas

Happy New Year

Happy Birthday

Happy Everything

Why do we assume that’s what people want to hear?

Why do we think everyone’s Christmas is merry?

or that they are excited to start a new year

or have been waiting impatiently for their birthday

***

It sure seems like that’s our only option

to be happy

to put away our issues

and enjoy yet another holiday season

***

But we are not happy

we are not okay

injustice after injustice is shoved in our face

the world is so far from fair

there seems to be no way to fix it

and we are screaming for help

but no one can hear

over their Merry Christmas

and a Happy New Year

***

You probably don’t know

but when you wish me happy anything

you make me feel like something’s wrong

like I’m the only one in the world

not willing to smile and cheer

***

How are YOU doing? Are you okay?

if not, just so you know

we’ve all been there, you’re not alone.

Life sucks sometimes

more than anyone can imagine

so most certainly

you DO NOT have to be merry or happy.
