It's easier to love you in the dark,
When your face is an outline and your breath warms the distance between us,
Our truths evaporate into whispers.
You reach for me as if light were a wound.
You're brave, in the dark-
Your hands steady, your voice certain.
Together, we aren't afraid of the things daylight burns away.
I know what morning does to you,
The sun is too honest a being,
Naming everything it sees,
Even the small tremors between us,
The places we try our hardest to smooth over.
Just for now, allow the dark to keep us gentle.
Let us stay here, half-real, half-hiding, until the birds begin to threaten the quiet.
As soon as dawn comes, we'll pull apart as though it's the only way of living honestly.
But promise me this,
When the sky forgets us again and the light turns kind enough to leave,
You'll find me here in the dark waiting for you, and we'll begin again from there.
