no highlight reel

more than an instagram post

no highlight reel

i have no desire for over sharing my love on social media

whenever i meet my next lover,

we won’t take videos and pictures just to share them on instagram,

saying, “Look how official we are! How happy! How wonderful!”

why do we need the highlight reel?

i’d rather capture the moments as they happen through my eyes,

through those sweet kisses,

through fingertips massaging my scalp as i lay my head against his chest and listen to his heartbeat

i’d rather enjoy the present moments and share only every so often

i don’t need to show him off to the internet to validate that i love him

to show the world that he is mine

and i know he feels the same

will i beg him to take down posts?

will i get furious when he wishes to post a “vacation recap”?

no.

no, no.

but, i have no “need” for him to show me off that way.

i know his loud love will come from kisses in the street,

dancing in the rain together,

excited exclamations of “THAT’S MY WIFE!” when i’m on a book or podcast tour

his smile when my name flashes across his phone and he’s near friends

his loud love will come from his desire to love me

i won’t be someone’s “dirty little secret,”

but someone’s greatest truth.

i have no need for the “highlight reel”

when I could simply live it

in the Now

every day

by his side

together

and apart
