Nightly Visitor

Why I can't sleep

By Dan R FowlerPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

Nightly Visitor

Am I to assume what you’ve said is right,

No matter my soul’s opposition putting up a fight.

For you to tell me what I should say or do,

Makes me believe you’re inciting a coup.

Marvelous stories you’ve offered as proof,

Of miraculous actions and make-believe spoofs.

Night’s shadows flickering in dimly lit hallways,

Create within me fanciful dreams with an unworldly gaze.

You stand near me with your handful of magic,

Even though I’ve warned you to do so could be tragic.

For it’s my choice to surrender to what you’ve proposed,

Or remain in my room safely behind with my mind closed.

To go with you and not remain in my room,

Would confirm my impressions of gathering gloom.

So go your way, you spirit of the night,

Leave me alone, stop speaking, and stay out of my sight.

Tonight, I need to slumber and sleep,

Surrendering to night’s bosom my soul to keep.

For tomorrow approaches as it has always done,

Replacing your invitation with the rays of the sun.

Be gone with you now, get out of my sight,

Leave me with what little I’ve salvaged of this night.

For as you know, there will be other chances,

Because you can’t stop or stay away or stop making glances.

It’s what you do as you wander about,

During your nightly voyages creating doubt.

But this night I’ve concluded and made a vow,

That if you come, I’ll resist you somehow.
