Night Rainbow

Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis

Rainbow at night ,

Massive solar flares from

our sun, in an eleven year cycle ,

its sunspot clusters shooting

toward the earth, spreading

pink and green fingers, some red,

down from above

surrounding the Big Dipper

next to an orange crescent moon

phenomena south of the Arctic,

even reaching Earth's southern hemisphere

A spring surprise blessing from above

snaking across the atmosphere

swirling colorful rays,

streaking the night sky

like a rainbow

Author Note: Unfortunately, the Vocal website was not working when I tried to publish this poem (5/11-12/24). Yesterday it still wouldn't accept the photos I took of the Aurora so I used Pixabay photo.

It is rare to see in our Pacific Northwest skies due to many cloudy nights but 5/10/24 was perfect. With bright city lights, we drove awhile, and as we rounded a bay of water, I saw veils of white in the sky and knew from my years in Alaska that we were witnessing the Aurora in WA state on a clear, hot spring night. We found a darker street and took photos. We returned home at about 1 a.m. and could see the Northern Lights above our house. It is a phenomenon we miss from Alaska that is rare to see in usually cloudy Pacific Northwest skies. and we saw pink and green swirls like we used to see in Alaska. Our iPhones took fabulous photos and showed the colors that the streetlights blocked out. I hope most of you got to experience this magnificent Aurora Borealis showing!

How amazing! Some glimpsed it in Kentucky too, but alas I wasn’t among them!

One of Nature's beautiful phenomena is the Northern Lights.

We saw it in a town centre in southern England, which is incredibly rare.

  • I hope you'll be able to add in those photos now. Loved your poem!

It rained that night in MD, so we missed it. I saw as a teenager in MN once though. Loved your poem, Andrea!
