Night before the End

Tired soul caught in a time loop seeks a traitor

By Elisabeth AllenPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

A chain

Holds the moon station in place

Suspended by a thread

I am me

I am another

Betrayed by a friend

Who almost lost my daughter

I must know why he wasn’t with her

All I have

All I can gain

Is knowledge

Cursed as I am within this time loop

A raft will take me to him

But it is out of fuel

No one gives me what I want

“The thread will soon be cut”

“It’s not safe to be outside”

I do not listen

To their warnings

Countless times

I have seen the chain release its hold

I’ve run out of time

The chain’s groan rents the air

The moon turns

Its cord cut

I fall

Flung into Space

My head bashing against my helmet

Strange

The time loop has not reset

I was sure the fall would kill me

As the moon drifts away

It cannot escape the sun

That crumples and flashes

In the disc of its fiery death

My body

Our body

Fizzles into dust

The time loop resets

I wake

Hoping it was all a dream

But I see

The night before the end

A chain holds the moon station in place
