New Gamora

From "Like a Moth on a Pin"

By Gene LassPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

For Kevin Coval

One day in May

They christened my home

New Gamora

They said it was a place

Full of sin

They circled us with

Blockades and

Barbed wire

To keep others out

And us in

At first no one used

The name New Gamora

Just our ZIP code

Or they said

Near North Side

The name came

When the Sheriff

Said criminals

In our homes

Had nowhere to hide

Surveillance with drones

And with cameras

From beat cops

And tapping our lines

Was about to yield

Harsher punishment

Than jail

Or levying egregious fines

That’s when the troops came

To New Gamora

That’s when the timer was set

Blanket judgment had been delivered

Our death penalty hasn’t come yet
