Nervous Automobiles

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 4 months ago 1 min read
Camille Pissarro, "The Boulevard Montmartre at Night," 1897

Light loves to teach darkness subtle lessons

In French, even insults contain music

Mistakes in the dark create happy sons

The laughter of old cities is rustic

It knows that even aristocrats fart

Gas burns to fill the streets with small fresh stars

Paris is a kitchen that makes sweet art

Secrets that burn states are told in its bars

Ancient streets make automobiles nervous

Antique cobblestones joke at their expense

Some nights are to glum sleep impervious

Even the cigarettes feel the suspense

Nocturnal recreation makes nations

Capable of daylight innovations

Ekphrastic

All of this is amazing but I think I could read that first stanza all day and find something new. Really loved this!
