“Neon Static”

Whispers and glitches in a wired city

By VishwaksenPublished 8 months ago 1 min read

They vibed in a city that never slept,

between the hum of vending machines

and the flicker of malfunctioning holo-ads.

Two shadows with wires,

a pair of cracked VR earbuds —

pink cables tangled like forgotten promises,

and a jury-rigged adapter glinting under neon rain.

No words needed.

Because in the blur of neon tongues and sirens,

they communicated with blinks,

the slow pulse of a heartbeat sent over blue-lit skin.

The world was a noise machine —

everyone shouting into the void,

but here, silence was the sanctuary.

A digital wish —

fingers tapping a frozen glass pane,

sending ripples into a datastream.

Did you wish for freedom?

For connection?

Or simply to be seen?

A crooked smile,

a spark of static in the eye,

the trace of a laugh that never reached the speakers.

“Let’s ghost this place,”

one said,

hand pulling the other through rain-slick streets,

past the broken streetlamps and neon ghosts.

Their palms sweated —

not from fear, but from the electric thrill

of carving out a moment of realness

in a city wired for noise.

Doors slid open with a hiss —

their sanctuary wasn’t perfect,

but every glitch and glitch was theirs.

One dropped a crate of synth-veggies,

another caught a fragment of data falling from a shattered screen.

In that chaotic little world,

everything belonged —

even the mess,

even the static.

And sometimes,

that was enough.

This description of a gritty, neon-lit world is really vivid. It makes me think of those times when you find a small pocket of calm in the middle of chaos. I wonder what kind of technology they're using for those VR earbuds and that jury-rigged adapter. And how did they manage to make that place their own, with all those glitches? It's an interesting take on a future city.
