My Very Best

Purpose in Life

By Colleen Millsteed Published 5 years ago Updated 5 years ago 1 min read

I often sit and think of all the times gone by

The roads travelled and the years passed,

The experiences that have shaped me

Would I do it differently, I often ask???

***

A childhood that I'd definitely pass on

A second time around,

As it was those very years

That run me into the ground

And caused all my tears and fears.

***

As I've moved through more stages of life

I found the need to harden my heart,

As people totally terrify me

And I've never fit in from the start.

***

Then I had my own family

And found my purpose in life,

I was born to be a parent

Even if I sucked at being a wife.

***

So it became just my boys and I

And yet I felt truly blessed,

I was determined history wouldn't repeat

And their childhood be without that stress.

***

I'm pretty sure I succeeded

As they've now flown the nest,

It's satisfying to see them leading their own lives

And I can honestly say I did my very best.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
