My Overactive Brain Makes My Life Meaningful
For Novel Allen's "What one thing makes your life most meaningful?" mini challenge
I have this brain, you see
It just won't ever stop
I spend half the time
Hating its existence
And the other half
Loving its consistence
From day to night
and darkness to light
My glorious brain
Is constantly full
Of words, sentences
phrases, lines, colours
Songs, lyrics, feelings
Questions, queries, mumblings
Memories, regrets, joys
Decisions, mistakes, successes
Our relationship is rocky
at times we fight a lot
at times we argue a lot
I've tried to numb it out
I've tried to kill it off
It comes back stronger
If slightly more unhinged
Always brilliant
At reminding me
of my screw-ups
faults and errors
Always brilliant
at making sure
Im never empty
for creative ideas
Whatever they may be
Funny, angry
Sad, deep
Loving, weird
Yes, weird,
lots of weird
weird, weird, weird
But
Aside from
My very loving wife
My kids
My dogs
and the breath in my lungs
In the morning when I wake
I'm most grateful for
my overactive brain

I'm at the mercy of my brain so I can't say what I wanna say about him, lol! Loved your poem!
Uh this is terrific Paul. I’m glad someone took the challenge seriously..I too have noisy brain…you seem to have learnt to manage this well through writing etc.☺️ “Comes back slightly more unhinged” I hear that! Thanks for always sharing and being so honest.
" could while away the hours Conferrin’ with the flowers Consultin’ with the rain And my head I’d be scratchin’ While my thoughts were busy hatchin’ If I only had a brain" Still checkin'. Nope, I still don't seem to have one. Thankful you do, though, Paul.
This is wonderful, and somewhat relatable… the interesting thing about the human mind is how easy it is to program. I’ve programmed mine to never say an unkind word about me. There are plenty of people in this world who’ve tried to break my spirit, so I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let my own brain tear me down. As for the never ending creative ideas, yes. Never a dull moment. I think that’s why I’m an introvert. I need time to tune into my favorite podcast… the one in my head! 😆
I can relate to and love it, indeed, the words of a true artist. It's a love/hate relationship, and I loved everything about this piece! Bravo!
I love this SO VERY MUCH! Paul, this was fun. clever, cute, funny, and genuinely just wonderful! I think we are all grateful for your "overactive brain", although it seems like the perfect amount of active to me! lol!
Wow Paul. You are on a roll. Some serious competition heating up here. I imagine you had this one written and waiting, this is a really great bit of reflection in record time. Very lovely indeed. I think my brain is a bit like that too. Hmmm! Your brain does you a favor, it keeps the juices clicking and the neurons firing. thank the brain for the gift. Thank you for your beautiful entry.
Wonderfully relatable. Sometimes I envy those who think without an internal monologue, but at the same time, I'm grateful that mine does rattle off information 24/7/365
