My Mother is Dead

A letter from the motherless on Mother’s Day

My mother is dead. On Mother’s Day a maternal happiness can be found, but where is mine if my mom is six feet in the ground?

My mother is dead. This brings me to tears if I think about it staring in space while I picture her face.

My mother is dead. She’s not here to cheer me up when I’m sad or calm me down when I’m mad.

My mother is dead. I can’t stress it enough how hard it is that she’s not here to pray with me when life gets rough.

My mother is dead. I’ve graduated college since she’s been gone. It was hard not having her there to cheer me on.

My mother is dead. My life giver through which I was carried. I won’t get to dance with her on the day I get married.

My mother is dead. Her absence lies dead at my feet. One day I’ll have grandchildren that she’ll never get to meet.

My mother is dead. Sometimes I see her in my dreams and her death ends up not feeling as real as it seems.

My mother is dead. The things I would love to hear my mother say if we could be together on Mother’s Day.

My mother is dead. If your mother still lives be sure to give her a kiss because one day she will pass on and surely be missed.

For the rest of my life these words will stay in my head. My mom is dead. My mama is dead. My mother is dead.

~~Dedicated to the loving memory of my mother who passed away, Ruby Lee Spencer.

And to everyone else who has a deceased mother on Mother’s Day, this one is for you.
