I started swimming this summer

I mean I always could

But I started trying this summer

To really make sure I did.

I took myself to the water

And I threw myself in

I let it work around me

I gave myself in

The waves surrounding me

My limbs, my fins.

Sand below, hips behind

Through my toes, something to find

I would duck right down, breathing sharp

Out, out as I went deeper looking hard

For something to hold, to remember the time

That I swam all summer, and summer was mine.
