My Hometown

Poem: How my hometown feels familiar but distant.

By Rilee AreyPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

My life is so different where I am now,

But when I go to visit,

There's nothing quite like my hometown,

The streets seem familiar, even when its dark,

I can tell you where I am just by the lights where I am parked,

Everything's seems the same, but I am seeing it at a new age,

Some shops have come and gone,

Some places never change,

The yard is overgrown where we used to play ball,

Our wooden floors still marked,

indented from life's greatest achievements and falls,

The trampoline has been dug out of the ground,

The pool has been emptied,

My sweet Prince no longer roams around,

Time has flashed by,

In a blink of an eye,

Twenty plus years of memories,

Collected in our home,

Seen on the streets,

Familiarity, so well known,

The way I drive to the golf course,

Without needing navigation,

But then forgetting how 4th street,

Is a one way right next to the police station,

Driving by the football stadium,

Students are gone,

But remembering tailgating with all of them,

Meeting up with old friends at the best food in town,

Acting like a tourist while walking around,

Though these are the streets where I learned how to drive,

The dairy mart where my grandma switched seats with me and told me its time,

The school on my left, I went to for 10 years,

Back to my grandma's old house on 31st street still brings me to tears,

My heart is engraved in this town,

In the soil, sunshine, clouds and all around,

These past years have felt like nothing but constant change,

But I know the feeling of my hometown, somehow always stays the same.
