My Heart’s Song
Thank you to my band and chorus members

A new year has arrived and with it my gratitude,
Today my heart is full, beating to my favourite song,
Every tune, every heartbeat, is a pulsing haven,
Where I’m grateful for those in my life, where they belong.
***
I have family that are nestled in safely,
Sitting in the corners, anchored in tight,
They beat their drum in the rhythm of love,
A large part of my band, as is their birthright.
***
Playing the harmonies, their voices loud,
Are the friends that I treasure all the more,
Long term people who’ve hung in through my sour notes,
And freshly made friends who I just adore.
***
There’s very little room left in my heart,
As I’m blessed with those who’re the absolute best,
Some hit the high notes, others the low bass,
Musical perfection, every nuance expressed.
***
I thought about cutting a record,
But unless you’re part of the group, you’d not understand,
The music, the notes, the words, the dance,
Of my one of a kind rock n’ roll band.
***
What you’d hear is a song terribly out of tune,
The clash of the drums overriding the blues,
The guitar rift racing faster as it heads to the heavens,
To include the band members who’ve paid their dues.
***
The bass will be loud, thumping to my heart’s song,
The vocals rise and fall on my deepest breaths,
The harmonica, oh, that harmonica,
Weaving it’s way through with sorrows and deaths.
***
But on those glorious days, like today,
When we are all in tune, happiness spreads,
The love in my heart, the gratitude for you all,
Sweeps through the Universe, in my musical threads.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
