When asked what my favourite colour was, I responded..."Black."
"Oh, black isn't a colour - it's a shade."
In fact, black is the absence of light
Black is long, dark nights
Black is scary
Black is evil, horror, and death -
Nothing sweet about it but the berry
Why is your favourite colour black???
Because Black...is me.
And it's not that the light isn't there
It's set deep inside my soul
It's fine wired through my skin so every time I smile I glow gold
A direct reflection of my heart
The prism which shoots iridescent rays of pride, potential, and possibilitiy
Sky blues to remind me of the beauty on the horizon
I find peace in green pastures of patience
While reds ignite fires under my passions, illuminating spaces that lackluster
Purples pick me up out of my depression and remind me that I'm royalty That my lineage is more than broken, suffering skin of mahogany
My history is deeply rooted in strength and perseverance and stretches my limbs towards the scorching Sun without singing a branch
For when we eclipse, we are one
Black is growth.
Found in the rich soils of my ancestry and the recesses of my mind
Like hallows waiting to be filled with knowledge and experiences spanning centuries and lifetimes before my physical existence
My Black-
It ranges from midnight to mocha
From copper to caramel
Chocolate, chestnut, coffee, and cognac
Butterscotch dreams and licorice sheen
Brown sugar beauty and cinnamon heat
Spicy smoked meat on a Caribbean breeze
Inhale...exhale - my Black breathes
Allow it to breathe
Please, allow it to breathe!
My Black is alive.
My Black is a life...and it matters
It is the birthplace of the spectrum
It covers all colours and holds them in its well before springing them forth into greyscale society
For the darkest cloud emits the most vibrant rainbow
It is not just for show or consumption, but for contemplation
Black is thoughts running deep
Black is good rest; needed sleep
Before a tinge exists... Black was and must be
So when I say my favorite colour is Black
I'm simply saying
My favorite colour is me.
