My Family Was Happy

you take it for granted as a kid.

By Danielle GarganoPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

I'm only eight, or maybe nine or ten

My brother's only four or five or six.

It's only four fifteen AM and dark;

Another year, our longest driving trip.

...

My daddy drives, my mom sits next to him.

My brother and myself are fake asleep.

Like every year, they get McDonalds first;

The lovely fragrance floods the little jeep.

...

New Jersey waits to welcome us back home.

We cannot wait to make sweet memories.

Our shoes come off; we're safe and snuggled down.

The highway's roar so soft, we enter sleep.

...

I'm drifting more with each small orange sun.

Yes, I remember we were happy, once.
