My Faithful Companion

A Beacon of Strength in Lantern Light

By Sandy GillmanPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Top Story - October 2025
A lantern glowing against the chill of a winter’s night — created with AI

Settling here on a winter’s eve

by the warmth of your embrace.

Weariness from the endless day

overcomes me,

but your light provides me

with the strength to start anew tomorrow.

***

As your wick gently sips oil,

I approach your glow

on this gloomy evening.

Following your halo,

I feel the courage to challenge

the dark times ahead.

***

With a hiss and crackle,

you burn your oil.

My faithful companion

showing your brilliance

as long as you’re needed.

***

Your flame begins to flicker

as I turn you down.

I trim the charred remains

of your wick,

knowing your flame will

burn bright for me

again tomorrow.

"As your wick gently sips oil, I approach your glow on this gloomy evening. Following your halo, I feel the courage to challenge the dark times ahead." The section above is absolutely stunning and emotional. I had to reread it several times. Congratulations, Sandy, on your top story and for making the leadership board this week. This poem is truly beautiful!🌹

Reading some of your writings, I can feel how exhausted you might be... sorry if I misinterpreted it. But you still manage to write about everything and turn it into art. How do you do it? I read in your other story that you don't know how working parents do it, I wonder the same about any parent. I sometimes can't even manage to feel like a human at the end of a working day and I don't have to be there for anyone but myself, basically... You're so powerful and so inspiring with all you do!

  • I love how the poem is about the lantern helping her but ultimately she is tending to the lantern, tired and grateful, so beautiful!

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your Leaderboard placement! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

Lantern Light Shinning oh, so bright, To guide a weary traveller home. Yonder sea and air For to be with you My dearest one. Remembering our foot steps In the snow, For you are gone my dear I carry and cerise your memory For ever in my heart. My dear sweet Jip mans best friend.
